WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF BRAKE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING?

05.06.2020

One of the many unpredictable situations that can happen to all drivers while driving is the failure of car brakes. Maybe some of you have had such an experience and you know for sure to what extent it can be uncomfortable.

To avoid panic and accidents, you should keep in mind what is the right thing to do when the brakes do not listen to you.

1. You must reduce your speed
If pressing the brake does not reduce the speed, there are other ways to do it successfully. For example, you can slow down with the gearbox, gradually, one by one, but never by abruptly skipping to the lowest speed, because then you risk locking the wheels. When you reduce the speed, the engine brake will be activated, and the speed of the engine, as well as the car itself, will decrease.

2. Pay attention to the gearbox position
Whether it is an automatic or manual transmission, make sure it is not in neutral. Surely you know very well that by putting the transmission in a neutral position, engine braking is disabled and, what is even more dangerous, the car continues to move freely. Moreover, acceleration and loss of control of the vehicle may occur.

3. Move the steering wheel carefully
You will certainly move the steering wheel while driving for a number of reasons, but try to avoid sudden and rough turns. If you handle the steering wheel gently and carefully, you will have control over the car and stop it safely and securely.

4. Apply the parking brake
Before applying the parking brake, make sure that the speed is reduced. In order for the car to stop completely with the handbrake, the speed should be low enough. Remember that you should not apply the parking brake with all your might, but gently, until you notice that the vehicle is slowing down completely. In the event of a sudden pull, you will only block the rear wheels.

We advise you to check the brakes regularly, especially if you travel frequently. However, it happens that sometimes it is not possible to avoid brake failure, so you should definitely know what to do if such a situation occurs.
